11 am / REINDUSTRIALISATION : DREAM OR REALITY ?

> > > MINUTES TO DONWLOAD HERE

Moderated by Laurent Raoul, Professeur permanent - Supply Chain et systèmes d’information, Institut Français de la Mode, Consultant associé, XL Conseil

Round table synthesis :

In this era of globalization, where the French fashion industry seems like it could disappear pretty soon, it’s remarkable that the world of textiles and apparel is reacting so quickly and working to affirm it’s specificity. With Laurent Raoul moderating, the roundtable panel which included Corinne Fénéon, Philippe Pasquet, Patrick Pergament, Ralph Toledano and Daniel Juvin shed some light on the issue and stressed the importance of maintaining and developing the French industrial. The trio of quality, responsiveness and creativity must be complemented by new paths of reflection such as the idea to outsource only specific aspects of production in order to foster and manage the growth of those requiring a deeper savoir-faire. This approach would allow the latter sources of production the advantage of being near the centers of design and decision-making.
The other major concern surrounding the notion of repatriating manufacturing besides pricing (it’s expected to pay more for luxury goods) is the issue of training and how to get rid of the poor image of, and lack of interest in, the field of fashion manufacturing currently espoused by today’s youth. Fashion not only needs designers and producers but also people who can actually make the goods. The French fashion industry is not dead but it has to be more responsive in order to best meet the needs of designers. The fashion and textile industries must strive for an “esprit du corps” in order to meet the challenges it’s currently facing.

2.30 pm / CREATIVE INDUSTRIES IN EUROPE : DESIGN, INNOVATION, COMPETITIVENESS

> > > MINUTES TO DONWLOAD HERE

Moderated by Pascal Morand, Professeur, ESCP Europe, Directeur de l’Institut pour l’Innovation et la Compétitivité i7

Round table synthesis :

With Pascal Morand moderating, roundtable participants Dominique Barbiery, Miguel Fluxa Orti, Pierre Oudart, Stephan Schwarz and Sidney Toledano debated the importance of creative industries that are fashion, design, video games, music, communication, media, etc. The economic downturn today is being countered by a new optimism linked to several factors : Europe and France, in particular, possess incredibles and richs heritage in savoir-faire and creative vitality that should endure. Fashion and luxury goods spearhead the creative industries of France. Creative industries are also growing rapidly in other European countries and cities, notably Berlin, where the creative ecosystem is flourishing.
In this context, synergies must grow and the frontiers that separate businesses must fade away without dissolving competition which fosters emulation.
The public sector in France and Europe must take the creative industries seriously notably since they play a major role in the economy. Education and training for the creative, development and production jobs will be the cornerstone of this building and must be supported by the government. Financing is another major factor where the Caisse des dépôts and the Banque Publique d’Investissement (BPI) play a central role. Fashion and luxury goods companies have an obligation to encourage other creative industries to aim towards the high end. These businesses are an important source of jobs, exports and wealth and serve as inspiration for other industries.

5.30 pm / A PHOTOGRAPHER "EN CAMPAGNE"

> > > MINUTES TO DONWLOAD HERE

Meet-up between Charles Fréger, Photographer & Raphaëlle Stopin, Curator.

Round table synthesis :

The roundtable discussion about photography featured photographer Charles Fréger alongside Hyeres’ own photography curator, Raphaëlle Stopin. The conversation focused on the body of Fréger’s work, photos and notably his photographic series. The emphasis on series is because that’s how Fréger pursues his work. After his portraits of water-polo players, majorettes, and the Fantasia series, Fréger presented the Wilder Mann series which features the wild man throughout Europe. Alongside this passion, Fréger never strays far from the world of fashion in which he has imposed his own vision and codes. His recent work for the Lacoste shirt demonstrates this thanks to the images taken of different regional French sports. An exhibition is not a final point for his work but a book is because it would mark the end of a series and allow him to mourn.
